Guitar Interactive BMG Review Special

Issue 40 of Guitar Interactive sees master guitarist and We Will Rock You veteran, Jamie Humphries take control of the always excellent free online magazine for a massive tribute to Brian May.

"Choosing a Brian May Special or, even better, a Super, will set you apart from the crowd... you will get a fabulous guitar in either case and one that will go places other guitars simply cannot venture into"

Alongside brand new interviews with Brian and his long serving tech Pete Malandrone (available exclusively in the magazine's online edition), Jamie presents a trio of extensive video reviews of the BMG Super, the BMG Special and the electro acoustic BMG Rhapsody.

The bumper edition also includes appraisals of Nigel Knight's Deacy amp replica, the Vox Custom AC30C2 and the full range of Greg Fryer/Knight Audio and KAT treble boosters.

BM aficionados should head to the GI website to check out Jamie's web-exclusive "Tone On A Budget" video in which the BMG Special is just one element in an eminently affordable hardware solution to the age-old conundrum of how to get the Brian May sound without blowing the bank.

Shout Out to BMG from Pro Tools Expert

The latest podcast (#206) from the always informative and engaging team at PRO TOOLS EXPERT published today includes a great shout out to Brian May Guitars from resident guitar guru Dan Cooper.

The studio ace and BRIT school graduate has long been a Special fan, having previously owned a Burns model for 13 years, but, for his "find of the week", the recent purchase of a stunning new natural finish BMG model has "confirmed to me why I love this style of guitar".

Evidently Dan is a very happy man with his new acquisition...

"it's awesome... I have not put it down all week!"

Most importantly, he clearly believes exactly what we and so many reviewers and BMG players have also come to understand...

"It's a Strat-killer in the studio. it's got 13 different pickup selections, a better neck, a clever tremolo. A lot of clients that work with me, they love that guitar because it can do anything, very well. It's not like "oh, we'll sound like Brian May today"... we can make it sound like a Les Paul or a Telecaster... it's absolutely amazing, cheaper than a USA Strat, and - I think - built better".

New BMG Video Review from Pro Tools Expert

Online community website PRO TOOLS EXPERT recently featured a great, down-to-earth appraisal of the BMG Special from resident guitar ace Dan Cooper.

Dan, a BRIT school graduate and long term BMG aficionado, does an excellent job of showcasing the wonders of the Special during his engaging and energetic video review, deftly explaining the mysteries of the switching system and tremolo assembly and ably demonstrating why the Special makes such a superb - and affordable - addition to his own studio arsenal.

Randy Bachman

Randy Bachman & Brian MayWinnipeg's finest rock 'n' rollin' son, Randy Bachman - of Bachman-Turner Overdrive fame - was guest of honour backstage when the globe-trotting Queen & Adam Lambert mega tour rolled into the Manitoba capital and was duly presented with a signed Black 'n' Gold Special by Brian.

Best known for the evergreen BTO anthem "You AIn't Seen Nothing Yet" and The Guess Who's blistering "American Woman", Randy is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to a hotly anticipated new album project that promises a returning to the 70 year old guitarist's raw, powerhouse, blues-rock roots.

Slated for a Summer 2015 release, the appropriately titled "Heavy Blues" will feature an all-star cast including Neil Young, Joe Bonamassa, Peter Frampton, Robert Randolph, Scott Holiday, Luke Doucet and the late Jeff Healey.

Another Custom Colour Combination

Here's another 'Custom Colour Combination' choice...

This time we tricked out a Metal May with a set of White Pearl pickguards for Pasku Frutos, guitarist with the hugely successful Spanish tribute act, Unrisen Queen.

Custom BM Special for Unrisen Queen

Contact the BMG sales team for information and ordering details for Custom Colour Combinations, or to enquire about any 'In-House' workshop modifications.

Custom Colour Combinations

Customise your Brian May Special with unique combinations of finish, hardware and scratchplate sets.

We get many requests to supply a guitar with hardware and/or scratchplates in a different configuration to the standard issue and, wherever possible, we are happy to facilitate this 'In-House' at no extra charge.

Hardware and pickups are available in Chrome, Black or Gold.

Scratchplate options currently include Black, Tortoise Shell, Off-White, Gold and Cream.

Alternatively, you can refresh the look of your current guitar by purchasing a new set of plates and fitting them yourself.

Picture shows, left to right :

  • Standard BMG Special in white, with Tortoise Shell plates,
  • White with White Pearloid plates (recently supplied to Canadian guitarist, Tony Wild)
  • White with contrasting Black plates - a favourite of Pete Malandrone's (reminds him of the mighty Quo!)

Guitar Interactive Reviews The BMG Special

"They really are very good, excellent value for money and offer great versatility for a beginner, a Brian fan or a pro"

Michael Casswell is certainly no stranger to BMG, having used his handpicked Black 'n' Gold Special extensively in the pit band for WWRY London and for his superb Queen/Brian May dedicated instructional DVD's for Lick Library. So, it was entirely fitting that he was tasked with reviewing the new 2012 iteration of the Special for the latest issue of online magazine, Guitar Interactive.

Needless to say, Mike is impressed with the upgrades evident in the MK. III models...  "They're getting better and better" he says, enthusing over the enhanced resonance, the quality and comfort of its neck, the performance of the newly appointed Wilkinson tremolo and the "organic" vintage sound of the BM branded Tri-Sonic style pickups.

In the accompanying video, Michael demonstrates exactly why the Special stands on its own merits as a superb studio and live instrument with a unique personality and unmatched versatility.

Signed BMG Special for StarCards Charity Auction

StarCards — a fantastic, non-profit organisation that raises funds through a unique collection of celebrity signed playing cards, photographs, art and memorabilia — launches their 10th Anniversary Christmas Auction today.

Amongst a suitably stellar selection of signed items from sporting stars, contemporary artists and legends of the entertainment world, BMG and Brian May have donated a signed Special to the 10-day auction which kicks off at a special party at London's iconic BT Tower this evening, featuring musical guests, Phil Hilborne, Julian Littman and the rocking harmonies of Woman, featuring Mazz Murray, Gina Murray and Emma Kershaw.

All proceeds of the auction will go to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital, which this year celebrates its 160th anniversary.

Here is StarCard supporter, Phil Hilborne promoting the auction and demonstrating the signed BMG Special...

New 2012 Specials

New colours abound in the ever expanding Brian May Guitars arsenal with a brand new trio of striking limited edition finishes.

First up is a superb Natural finish Special with black scratch plates, which some have commented might arguably be closer to the Old Lady's current faded glory than the favoured Antique Cherry finish!?

Eddie Ojeda, axe master with veteran NYC shock-rockers Twisted Sister, has already taken delivery of a suitably monikered Metal May. In what can only described as "None-More-Black", this beauty boasts a black finish, black plates, black tuners, control knobs, pickup covers and bridge plate with a contrasting white pin-stripe binding and white pickup/phase switches... we figured that, with a guitar with this much on-board versatility, you should be able to see what you're doing!

Last but not least, we have introduced a sumptuous Limited Edition Windermere Blue Special with a chrome hardware and a defiantly retro, "mint-green" set of plates. Think Lake Placid... but more British!

FM Tune in To BMG

Here's a clip of guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick from British melodic rock stalwarts FM using his Brian May Guitars Special at last week's special headline show at Shepherds Bush Empire, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the release of the band's début LP "Indiscreet". Co-inciding with the album's re-release - in deluxe, remastered form, naturally - the gig was shot for a DVD release later in the spring.

Green is the colour of choice for Jim on the stone-cold FM classic "Frozen Heart"...

BRIT School Guitarist Of The Year - Ben Lochrie

The undoubted highlight of the BRIT School's recent 2011 "Industry Day" was an amazing virtuoso performance by 18-year old BEN LOCHRIE - on his left handed BMG Special.

Crowned "Guitarist Of The Year" by the prestigious performing arts and technology institution, Ben tore up the stage with an incendiary take on Joe Satriani's "Satch Boogie" before receiving his award from legendary Beatles producer and former BRIT school governor, Sir Gorge Martin.

Congratulations to Ben from all at House Music and Brian May Guitars... and a quick hello to Ben's proud father, JAZ LOCHRIE - ex. Go West, Bad Company bassist and long term mate, who has been bass player in the hit West End musical MAMMA MIA for the last decade - it's all in the genes!
