BREXIT - A NOTE FOR EUROPEAN CUSTOMERS
On January 31st, 2020 the United Kingdom officially left the European Union, embarking on an uncertain future as it began the painstaking process of severing the intimate ties to the EU it had made over nearly half a century whilst attempting to establish a network of thriving new relationships with Europe and trading partners around the world.
Immediately post-Brexit, during the so-called "transition period", Britain's plans were to quickly negotiate a mutually beneficial trading arrangement compatible with the disparate interests of the 27 countries within the bloc. Despite British Prime Minster Boris Johnson's repeated claims that obtaining bilateral consent on a future relationship was achievable before an initial December deadline, the new President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, insisted in February that negotiating a full, free trade agreement with the UK before the end of the year was “impossible”, a view echoed by EU trade commissioner Phil Hogan, who warned that the timetable set by Downing Street was too tight.
And that was, of course, before the ravages of the COVID-19 pandemic… now, with resources across the continent dedicated to meeting the huge humanitarian, social, and economic challenges posed by the novel Coronavirus, the British government's already optimistic timeline for agreeing a deal has been dismissed as “fantasy land” by EU insiders. Whilst it would have been possible, and inarguably prudent, for Mr. Johnson to have requested an extension to the transition period (by up to one or two years, if necessary), Downing Street deliberately ran the clock down on the June 30th deadline, leaving just six months left to negotiate, sign and seal the parameters of the UK's future relationship with its biggest and closest trade partner. That's six months left to compromise, because, without compromise - on both sides - there is the increasingly real possibility of the UK crashing out without a formal deal.
So, moving towards 2021, although we know that Brexit will almost certainly change the way that UK companies trade with customers within the European Union, it is impossible to predict whether this will involve new customs tariffs and duties on goods for European customers.
In the meantime, with the UK continuing to contribute to the EU budget and follow its rules on regulations, standards, and trade, please be assured that - now, and for the the rest of 2020 - there will be no additional import duties or taxes due on goods and our current European pricing and shipping charges for all orders including Brian May Guitars will continue to remain in effect.
